Sequoia is a botanical name for a genus of conifers. Today it is classified in the cypress family (Cupressaceae), although until recently it was classified in the family Taxodiaceae.
Today, the genus includes only one species: Sequoia sempervirens (coastal sequoia). In common parlance, Sequoia also refers to Sequoiadendron giganteum (sequoias) (which has long been classified under the genus).
Sequoias existed all over the world before the Ice Ages, as fossil finds have proven: now extinct are Sequoia affinis, Sequoia chinensis, Sequoia langsdorfii, Sequoia dakotensis, and Sequoia magnifica.
The coast sequoia or coast redwood (Sequoia sempervirens) occurs naturally along the coast in California (United States). The tallest tree in the world is a specimen of this species (115 m), it is located in the Redwood National Park.[1] Both Sequoia sempervirens and Sequoiadendron giganteum have a striking red bark.
