Consols Mine in Morvah is a reminder of the region's rich mining history, which flourished in the 18th and 19th centuries. Cornwall was known for mining tin and copper. Consols Mine was part of a larger network of mines in Cornwall that contributed heavily to the global tin and copper market. The name "Consols" often stands for "Consolidated Mines", a reference to the merging of smaller mines into larger operations to increase efficiency. Like many other mines in Cornwall, Consols Mine faced various challenges, including depleted ore deposits, falling metal prices and competition from abroad, particularly from South America and Australia. These factors ultimately led to the closure of many mines in the region.
Today, the remains of Consols Mine form part of the UNESCO Cornish Mining World Heritage Site. These sites are a reminder of the legacy of Britain's Industrial Revolution and the hard work of the miners who worked in often dangerous conditions.
