The name Airon comes from the Latin agro which means fertile land. The history of the village is linked to that of Airon-Notre-Dame. Both parishes belonged to the Abbey of Saint-Josse. Moreover, a chapel was built in 1809 on the site called the Bavémont Cross because, according to tradition, Saint-Josse restored the sight of a little girl on this site when he returned from his pilgrimage to Rome in 665
