On the Voorlinden estate, in the middle of the dune plain, there are two towers by Anselm Kiefer.

As a child, the artist played among the rubble in a bombed Germany. There he built his first towers with found debris. He never stopped building after that.

Kiefer made these towers with bunker-like blocks of reinforced concrete; you can still see the reinforcing steel sticking out of the parts. The stacked blocks together reach 15 and 17.5 meters high and look like the remains of a building destroyed by the war.

Kiefer has slid a few books between the different parts. On top of one tower he placed a stack of books, on the other he lets a ship balance over the edge.

I confess that I didn't recognize the books as described by Katrien. But at least I recognized the ship. A beautiful place and the path through the dunes to get there is also beautiful. If you go to the Voorlinden Museum, you can definitely take the towers with you. And you should go inside the towers too - the view from the top is impressive.
