The fortifications of the 14th century connected four city gates and eleven towers through a city wall. The entire city wall was about 3000 meters long. The plant was designed to protect the inhabitants, e.g. in the Soest feud, in the Thirty Years' War, or in battles that led the rulers against each other, and to ward off robber barons. The walls were between 1.20 meters and 1.80 meters wide and 3.00 meters to 3.50 meters high. The thickness of the wall rejuvenated upward, where the battlement was protected by a mural crown interrupted by observation and shooting gaps. In places where the city was not protected by its location on a mountain nose with steep drops, but passed into the open land, additional double trench pieces were created.

From the city fortifications remained the Hachtor and the semicircular witch tower and extensive remains of the city wall preserved. Today, the former city wall is a circular route around the historic center that invites you to visit it once. You will always find new insights and views of the Rüthener history and the nature park Ansberger forest with its many idyllic places.
