The Grand-Carré lock, located on the canalized Deûle, dates from 1978. It is part of the VNF large-gauge network. In 1982, the Deûle's gauge was increased from 350 to 800 t between Marquette and Deûlémont, then to 1,350 t downstream of Lille in 2004. Undertaken in 2012, major works between Lille and Deûlémont allow the Deûle to accommodate units of up to 3,000 t, the equivalent of more than 100 trucks. Each year, the Grand-Carré lock sees many commercial and pleasure boats pass through. Ports de Lille is one of the main inland ports in France, bringing together 12 sites established along the large-gauge canals of Hauts-de-France, the 4th logistics region. In 2017, river traffic via the Ports of Lille represented 1,833,664 tonnes.
