The airfield, which opened on September 1, 1952 as Bitburg Air Base, was home to the 36th Fighter Wing of the US Air Force. Since the US Air Force withdrew, there have been several attempts to use it for aviation purposes. These ranged from the establishment of aircraft manufacturers to the operation of a maintenance airport. Unfortunately, the last deal to privatize the airfield fell through.

Now the whole area has been developed into a large industrial park. The runway and the tower are used by sport pilots and parachutists.
