Vulcan is a figure from Roman mythology and, together with Juno, Cybele and Neptune (these statues are also in the palace garden), embodies the four elements.
As the god of fire, he made weapons for the gods and heroes of the mythical world in his forge. Usually depicted as hunchbacked and somewhat older, Verschaffelt has created him here young and of flawless beauty.
What the dog behind Vulcan's back stands for is not entirely clear.
