In 1579, Ludwig Welser, a member of a prominent patrician family of merchants from Augsburg and Nuremberg and serving as the steward of the Hohenschwangau estate, purchased the existing building and its lands in Holzhausen and expanded it into a stately noble residence. He christened the building, with the consent of the then Emperor Rudolf II, "Rudolfshausen Castle."
Over the years, the castle changed hands several times.
In the fall of 2011, the castle found a new owner: Helene Walterskirchen, a Munich-based author, publicist, and cultural mentor, now lives and works in the historic building with her daughter.
