Coming from the city center, you pass through the first gate. Here is the entrance to the old Israelite section, a burial ground interspersed with lush greenery with many architecturally interesting monuments. In other sections, graves of Austria's celebrities and honorary graves can be admired.

The old Jewish cemetery is located here at Gate 1.

History

The 260,000 m² area at Gate 1 was purchased by the Israelite religious community in 1877 from the city of Vienna for 60,000 guilders (approx. 600,000 euros).

The first burials according to Mosaic rites took place in 1879.

The number of dead in this part of the cemetery is given as around 100,000 in 60,000 graves.

When the cemetery was full, the religious community purchased another part of the cemetery (Gate 4), which was opened in 1917. Nevertheless, burials still take place at Gate 1 today, albeit sporadically.
