The castle is probably the ancestral castle of the noble family of Riedern, who named themselves after the place and owned or were enfeoffed with property in the area and the place. As an imperial noble family, they were organized in the knightly canton of Odenwald. Like their feudal relationships, the castle holdings are also the same. The castle is documented in a document dated March 19, 1369 with the Counts of Wertheim.
