The Breitenau estate was first mentioned in 1206 as the property of the Bronnbach monastery, which had been founded fifty years earlier. The farm was linked to the economically important fishing rights in the Erfa and the extensive meadows, which also supplied hay and animal feed to several other farms. Part of it was leased and brought in good income. The forest was also economically important. From the 16th century onwards, the farm was leased to a permanent farmer, who was often employed by the monastery as a fish master and forester at the same time.
