The current market town of Schörfling am Attersee was first mentioned as Sceroluingen in 803 in a deed of donation to the Mondsee Monastery. Mondsee was donated in 748 by the Bavarian Duke Odilo. After its incorporation into the Franconian Empire, it became an imperial monastery and - similar to the monastery of St.Gallen at that time - received generous funding. Mondsee became - like St.Gallen - a center of the "Carolingian Renaissance".
