Monument to the fallen of Helmsdale and Kildonan valley. It was inaugurated in 1924, initially to commemorate the locals who died in World War I; the names of those who died in World War II were added later.
The most special thing happens every November. As many of the men whose names appear here died and were buried far from Helmsdale, the locals made a large wooden cross for each of them. They place them around the monument with their rank, name, and military unit, symbolically creating the place of remembrance that many could never have in their hometown.
