From the middle of the 19th century, the port in Örnsköldsvik played an important role in the development of the town. Lumber from the numerous steam sawmills in the area around the town was shipped here. And in the 20th century, products from the pulp industry were also shipped here. The goods traded included oil, coal and grain, for example. From the end of the 19th century, the handling of general cargo and bulk goods such as coal and ore increased. Unloading and loading these goods required a large number of people and was very dangerous.
