The Thurbruch is a fen area in the east of the island of Usedom. The name is derived from Thur (or Ur), an old name for the aurochs, and therefore means aurochs swamp.
The Thurbruch, with an area of around 16 square kilometers, is one of the largest fens in the north of eastern Germany. In addition to the Gothensee, the largest inland lake on Usedom, the Kachliner See is also located in the Thurbruch. The area is crossed by numerous drainage ditches, the oldest of which date back to the 18th century.
