The Oberursel engine factory, founded in 1892, is considered to be the oldest aircraft engine factory in the world still in operation. It goes back to a milling machine factory built in 1882, which was the first mechanical engineering factory in Oberursel at the time. Having grown up with the "Gnom" stationary engines, it developed into the second largest manufacturer of motor locomotives in Germany at the beginning of the 20th century. The Oberursel rotary engines built during the First World War were used to equip the first German fighter planes, which are remembered as the "Red Baron's" Fokker triplane. Between the world wars, the Deutz engines that drove mechanization in German agriculture in the "farmer's tractor" were also built in Oberursel. In addition, from 1941 onwards, work was carried out on the development of large aircraft engines.
After the Second World War, the factory fell victim to reparations dismantling, and the US Army used it as a repair depot for eleven years. At the beginning of the 1960s, aircraft engine construction returned to the factory with various licensed production and in-house developments. In 1990, a new era began with the company BMW Rolls-Royce AeroEngines and the development of the BR700 thrust engines for regional and business jets. After the transition to Rolls-Royce Germany, the plant developed into a center of excellence for rotating engine components, in particular for compressor drums, for compressor wheels in BLISK design and for turbine disks.
