Saint Nicholas, Bishop of Myra, to whom the church in Gemünd is dedicated, is one of the most popular saints of all, along with Saint Martin. Almost every child in Germany - and far beyond - should know his commemoration day, December 6th.
On the eve of this day, the children used to put their shoes or boots in front of the door - which of course had to be cleaned with great care - so that they could be filled with gifts by St. Nicholas during the night. In more agricultural areas, it was also customary for the children to put out a small amount of food for the donkey, St. Nicholas' riding animal (according to another tradition, it was a white horse).

The Roman Catholic parish church of Gemünd is dedicated to St. Consecrated to Nicholas of Myra.
A chapel was built in the 15th century. This was expanded in 1728 to a three-stone hall church made of quarry stone with a roof rider. The chapel from the 15th century has served as a choir ever since. With the elevation to the parish in 1802, the chapel was also elevated to the parish church. In 1847 the church received a porch in the west. At this point, however, it was already clear that the church would no longer be sufficient for worshipers in the long run. In 1850 a church building association was founded with the aim of building a new church. Soon afterwards the Aachen government building councilor Theodor August Stein gave the parish blueprints for a new church. After some changes and adjustments to the plans, the foundation stone of today's parish church was laid on May 16, 1859. By 1862 the church was completed except for the tower. The archbishop of Cologne Paulus Melchers carried out the consecration on September 18, 1866. The bell tower could not be completed until 1888.
