Top cycling routes to Rothensee Lock at the Magdeburg Waterway Junction

Tips

  • It was put into operation in 1938 as part of the waterway crossing that was started at that time. Via the Rothenseer connecting canal, it connects the Mittelland Canal, which is 16 meters higher on average, with the Elbe and the Magdeburg ports.

In order to move ships over the difference in height, an 85-meter-long and twelve-meter-wide trough rises above 16 meters. This trough rests on two rigidly connected supporting structures, each provided with a float. The ten meter wide and 36 meter high swimmers move in 70 meter deep shafts filled with water.
