The pile of stones indicates the place where a dead man was found.
Since no name is mentioned, but only Omo Morto, it is assumed that it was a stranger, perhaps a traveler, or a pilgrim who was travelling one of the many alternative routes to the Via Francigena.
It is tradition that anyone who passes by here, out of respect for the place, adds a stone to the pile in perpetual memory of the man who was found dead.
