Source area of the Alte Schwentine
The name Schwentine, "holy river", goes back to Slavic settlers from the year 600, who found old burial sites here. The Alte Schwentine rises in the meadows at the foot of the Grimmelsberg and in the mill pond of Bornhöved. It is the actual Schwentine and was only degraded to a tributary of the Bungsberg-Schwentine due to the cartographer Caspar Danckwerth's confusion in 1652. On the road from Bornhöved to Tarbek, about 200 m behind the exit of Bornhöved on the left-hand side, there is a signpost with the inscription "Schwentinequelle". The source area is in the meadows there, from where the small stream flows westwards. Just before the Alte Plöner Chaussee, the Alte Schwentine takes in the water from the Große Au and directly behind it the spring stream from the mill pond and flows on to Bornhöveder See.
