1627 | Dutch Pirates

Three Dutch pirate war ships loaded with Spanish gold and silver led by buchaneer Claes Compaen arrived into Killybegs harbour while awating pardon from the Queen of England.

The High Sheriff of County Donegal, Sir Basil Brooke, reported to Dublin Castle, "Last Thursday night, 3 ships of war came into Killybegs, one of about 500 tons with 40 brass and iron cannon, the others with about 30 cannon. I have asked Compaen to do no damage if indeed he has come for the King's pardon".

One eye witness tells the tale: "Boats from the pirate ships came ashore looking for food and water, they had a long voyage."

"Boats plied to and fro. Groups of pirates began to come ashore, the peace-loving citizens of Killybegs noted with relief that they were unarmed except for knives to cut their meat.
