There is a beautiful view from up there. The paths are well laid out and everything is well maintained. If you like vines and their landscape, you are in good hands.

"The sculpture "Dice Game" takes up an event from 1677. Two deserting mercenaries were sentenced to death. The ringleader was to be punished even more severely - with a punishment that would have an impact even beyond death.

The court was unable to identify him and decided that the two had to roll dice on a mercenary drum under the gallows to determine the type of execution - the one who rolled the lowest number was to be hanged and the "winner" with the higher number was to be shot. Death was thus already certain for both players, but there was also something else at stake that is hardly understandable from today's world view - it was a game about the fate of the soul. To seal this, three rounds of dice were needed -

Ending life by being shot was considered honorable. The person shot was allowed to be buried in the "god's acre". This left the soul with the vague hope of escaping eternal damnation by to escape purification in purgatory and then enter heaven. Death by hanging, on the other hand, was considered dishonorable. The corpse was buried somewhere or simply left hanging on the gallows and left to be eaten by the birds. The soul went to the devil and was lost forever - damnation for all eternity - a horrific idea even for hardened mercenaries at the time.

This is a true story that can be found in the BW State Archives in Karlsruhe."

The sculpture was created from a dead and decapitated linden tree that stood in front of the castle.
