Lake Steinrod – Gräfenhausen 🏃‍♂️👟

Lake Steinrod is located in Gräfenhausen, a district of the Hessian town of Weiterstadt near Darmstadt, and is a popular recreational area. 🏃‍♂️👟

The lake was created in the 1930s during the industrial mining of sand and gravel for the construction of the Frankfurt am Main-Darmstadt Reichsautobahn (now the Federal Autobahn 5). After this use ended, the lake area was converted into a leisure center and used as a swimming lake. After the influx of bathers increased and the lake threatened to silt, swimming was discontinued. After the lake was extensively desilted in 1992, swimming was no longer permitted, and the area was designated a quiet recreational area.

The lake, home to numerous species of fish, covers 12 hectares and is approximately 4 meters deep. Next to Lake Steinrod is the "Fischerhütte" (fishing hut) (a place to stop for a bite to eat), a campsite for short-term and long-term campers, and a fishing park with a man-made lake. There is also a large beer garden, a playground, and some animals in an outdoor enclosure. 🏃‍♂️👟
