The idea for erecting the memorial originated in 1900 within the Rüstringen Heimatbund (Rüstringen Homeland Association), apparently under the influence of Hermann Allmers. A memorial committee was established in Rodenkirchen in 1910. The property on Butjadinger Heerstraße, today's Friesenstraße, was donated by Rodenkirchen resident Georg Töllner. A fundraising appeal was made by historian Gustav Rüthning. The memorial was intended to commemorate the courageous, but allegedly treason-lost, battle of the Butjadinger and Stadland Frisians against the Oldenburg counts and Brunswick princes at the Battle of the Hartwarder Landwehr, and to serve as a role model for today's young people.

The bronze monument depicts a Frisian warrior with a round shield and morning star. However, the Oldenburg historian and archivist Georg Sello criticized the design as unhistorical, arguing that Frisian weapons at the time consisted of a long lance, a straight sword, and a small leather round shield. The monument bears two inscriptions:

In memory of the Battle of the Hartwarder Landwehr in 1514. Erected by the Rüstringer Heimatbund in 1914
Lewer dod as Sklav (Low German: Better Death than Slave).
