On November 8, 1911, the fountain created by the Krefeld sculptor Franz Brahmstädt (1877 to 1919) was inaugurated in the Hohenzollernstrasse, which was then criss-crossed by ponds and ditches.
The people gave it various names: the fairytale fountain, because it is believed to be a depiction of the Brothers Grimm's "little sister and little brother"; the Deußen fountain, to commemorate the fountain's founder, the Krefeld velvet manufacturer Friedrich Wilhelm Deußen. The name "children's fountain" has become established, because it depicts two "children making wreaths" by Franz Brahmstädt, who was closely associated with the Duisburg sculptor Wilhelm Lehmbruck.
The fountain is, apart from an angel figure in the cemetery, the only surviving work by Brahmstädt, who in his time was placed in a row with Jan Thorn Prikker and Heinrich Campendonk.
