Håkonshalle was built by King Håkon Håkonsson between 1247 and 1261. According to tradition, it is said to have been used for the first time on September 11, 1261 for the marriage of his son, later also known as Magnus Lagabøte, to the Danish princess Ingeborg Eriksdatter. The hall was mainly used as a royal residence and festival hall during this period. The building was in a very dilapidated condition during the Middle Ages and was used as a granary from 1683.
