"The St. Nicholas parish church in Eupen is rich in works of art and occupies a special place in the art-historical development of the Rhine-Maas region.

    History:
The first "Capella Sancti Nicolai" in "Oipen" is mentioned in a document from 1213 in the "Annales Rodenses". The south tower, built from irregular quarry stones, probably comes from this complex. This first chapel was replaced by a Gothic church in the 14th or 15th century, with the south tower from the 12th century being incorporated into the new complex.
The current church was built in the years 1720-1726 according to plans by Laurenz MEFFERDATIS, architect of the Free Imperial City of Aachen.
It was consecrated in 1729. He also incorporated the old south tower into the new church. Although the Baroque style was in full bloom almost everywhere in Europe at that time, the church is based on Renaissance architectural styles. The facade and the two towers were built in 1897-1898 according to plans by the architect L. von Fiese from Gelsenkirchen. Architecture: The church and its towers dominate the image of the upper town of Eupen. Only the entrance portal with its frame and the central window above it have been left as planned by Mefferdatis. The church is a typical "hall church", i.e. the three naves are almost the same height and combined into a single spatial structure. It has neither a transept nor a choir aisle. This type of building transfers the pressure of the vaults via columns and masonry, so that no buttresses are required. The church is built in greywacke. It has large round-arched windows with bluestone surrounds. A pointed roof turret crowns the seven-sided choir. The roof is covered with slate. Inside, the church has a round-arched cross-rib vault supported by fourteen unadorned round columns. The arches and yokes of the choir apse feature tasteful stucco decorations."

      "Interior:
The church is decorated in the Baroque style, with the various pieces of equipment overlapping the Aachen and Liège Baroque. A precious work of art is the high altar, built between 1740 and 1744 according to plans by the architect Johann Josef Couven, Aachen. It was carved by the Liège sculptor Hubert Hyard. The marbling and colouring are by another Liège artist: Jakob Hainaux. The outstanding statues of the crowning angels, the Trinity and Saints Nicholas and Lambertus, as well as the richly carved tabernacle composition, are particularly impressive.
The two side altars (around 1770) are also decorated with rich carvings, with the right one, with an Annunciation group in the retable niche, worthy of special attention. On the four upper pillars, there are so-called chapels: baroque statue niches with tasteful decoration; the statues are works from the
      19th century. Century.

Also noteworthy are: the pulpit erected in 1730,
four confessionals (1758) with openwork carved Bible tops, the richly decorated wall paneling (1758) in the upper part of the side aisles, two wood-carved 2.10m high candelabras (around 1740), the organ with an impressive facade (1760-1762) and the uniformly designed pews with the names of old Eupen families (from 1730).
The statues of the apostles and evangelists, the Immaculata and the triumphator, all around 1.80m high, placed on the tower walls and on the pillars, are works by the Cologne sculptor Jeremias Geisselbrunn (1595-1660).
They were created around 1640 and were acquired in 1866 from the inventory of the Minorite Church in Cologne.
In 1852, a mission cross was erected on the facade in front of the north tower, the head of Christ in cast iron being modeled on the late Gothic crucifix from the 16th century in the parish church in Baelen.

Note also the latticework that was built in 1767 and faces the street."

A beautiful, old church in Eupen's upper town.
