The interior design of Neuschwanstein Castle features the recurring element of the soaring swan. This symbolizes purity and is the heraldic animal of the Counts of Schwangau, to which Ludwig II belonged. This bird can be seen everywhere, on the faucets, stained-glass windows, and even on the roof of the royal carriage.

Neuschwanstein Castle was built by the Bavarian King Ludwig II in 1869 and was never completed. For him, his castle was a monument to the culture and royalty of the Middle Ages, which he admired and wanted to understand. Built and furnished in medieval forms, but with the most modern technology of the time, it is the most famous building of historicism and the epitome of German idealism.

Ludwig II's father, Maximilian II, had the nearby Hohenschwangau Castle, which had been the seat of the Lords of Schwangau in the Middle Ages, furnished in a neo-Gothic style since 1832. Here Ludwig, born in 1845, immersed himself in the worship of the Middle Ages. He learned legends and history from the murals and from avid reading.

From 1861 onwards, he was decisively influenced by his encounter with Richard Wagner's musical dramas, which enhanced medieval legends with incomparably powerful music. Ludwig first experienced "Lohengrin" and "Tannhäuser". Later came "Tristan and Isolde", the "Ring of the Nibelung" and Wagner's adaptation of the legend of the Grail King Parzival ("Parsifal"), with whom Ludwig II identified in his final years and with whom Wagner identified him.

One of the most famous German castles, the Wartburg, had just been refurbished and restored in 1867 and became a direct model. In the 19th century, building in historical forms meant "perfecting" the old styles, also with the help of modern technology and the historical sciences. As a pronounced idealist, Ludwig II believed in such perfection like no other in his time.
