In the Middle Ages, most of the citizens of Melsungen earned their living from logging. Every morning, the woodcutters would go into the forest with their 'Barten' (Middle High German term for axe or hatchet) to chop wood. On the 'Bartenwetzerbrücke' (axe-sharpening bridge), they sharpened their axes on the soft sandstone of the railing. The traces of this activity can still be seen today in the deep, round notches in the bridge railing.
This event also led to the local nickname 'Bartenwetzer' for the inhabitants of Melsungen.
