In the High Middle Ages, the area around Krombach was largely owned by the Counts of Rieneck and Krombach was the seat of a regional court. The counts died out in 1559 and Krombach came into the possession of the Archbishopric of Mainz. In 1666, the family of the Barons and later Counts of Schönborn acquired the regional court of Krombach. The town became the center of the counts' possessions in the upper Kahltal.
