The 'Stodthagen Natural Forest and Adjacent Raised Moors' nature reserve was established in 1942 and protects the remains of a raised bog, much of which has been drained or converted into grassland. The dams you walk on are traces of this former use.
In the east of the nature reserve is a moor lake of almost 1 hectare, created by peat extraction.
To prevent further drainage of the bog, individual ditches were sealed, creating numerous pools in the forest, which you can see directly on the Komoot map.
Of the vegetation typical of raised bogs, heather and cotton grass are particularly enchanting.
The nature reserve is closely connected to the Stodthagen Forest to the south. The bog drains via ditches to the Mühlenau, which flows into the Fuhlensee near Schilksee, which you may recognize from ice skating in winter.

Here is a bench on which you can sit down to take a break. Best in the early morning or evening when hardly anyone is on the move! A real place to unwind, to recharge your batteries from everyday life.
