The Freital Ost-Possendorf railway line stretches over 13.2 kilometers. The first German mountain railway was built around 1856 to remove the coal mined on the Windberg near Freital. It is generally known as the Windbergbahn. The upper section was shut down in 1951, the remaining section was used for uranium ore transports by SDAG Wismut until 1989. The remaining freight traffic ended in 1993. The buildings and facilities that still exist along the entire route have been listed as cultural monuments since 1980 and are owned by the Saxon Museumeisenbahn Verein Windbergbahn e. V.
