On the Penice pass, in the clearing, there is a statue dedicated to San Colombano. Born in Ireland in 540 AD, he reached Bobbio where he founded a monastery which in subsequent centuries became fundamental for agriculture and Po Valley and European culture. Colombano learned the most advanced techniques of cheesemaking (laying the foundations for the birth of Grana cheeses) and viticulture in Burgundy. Furthermore, he founded a library where the scribes saved numerous Latin and Greek codes from destruction. For Italian history San Colombano had an immense importance, still partly to be re-evaluated.
