It was once called "Haus unter den Linden", but the pretty building on the lower Friedrichstrasse, corner of Schloßstrasse, is much better known as the "Mayor's House". A single large linden tree - it is said to date from the time of its construction - still reminds us of the original name of the building, which has had an eventful history over the course of around 190 years.

The exact year of construction is, however, unknown. Various sources date it to the period between 1810 and 1825, but the building is not yet recorded in the original land register of 1817. The Velbert merchant Kölver is named as the builder, whose family was one of the richest and most respected families in the city 200 years ago.
