The bronze stele of Uwe Johnson stands in his hometown of Güstrow on the cathedral square, very close to the John Brinckman Gymnasium, which he attended from 1948 to 1952. The ceremonial inauguration of the stele took place on July 20, 2007. It was created in 2006 by Wieland Förster - a contemporary of Uwe Johnson - and is 210 cm high.

Uwe Johnson was born on July 20, 1934 in Cammin (Pomerania) and died on February 24, 1984 in Sheerness on Sea in England. After studying in Leipzig, he lived in West Berlin and earned the unpopular label of "poet of divided Germany". His departure from his homeland in 1959 never resulted in a loss of his ties to his homeland. At the age of 19, Uwe Johnson began writing his first novel.

Uwe Johnson (1934 – 1984) is considered one of the most important German authors of the post-war period. His literary work is shaped by events in divided Germany, but it is more than just a documentation of the East-West conflict.
