With the opening of the route from Maastricht to Aachen on October 20, 1853, Meerssen received a stopping point on the new route. When it opened, the station received a small entrance building, which was expanded several times in the years that followed. In 1900 the first reception building was replaced by a new building that has been preserved to this day.
