The Schönberg domain was founded by the Princely Abbey of Prüm, fortified by a castle that was destroyed by the troops of Louis XIV in 1689. From 1374 until the invasion of the French revolutionary armies in 1794, the place belonged to the Electorate of Trier and was the seat of the Electorate of Trier's Schönberg office, to which the farms (administrative units) of Amelscheid, Auw and Manderfeld belonged.
