On Place König-Baudouin, near the church, there is this memorial in honor of the American soldiers who died or were taken prisoner around Schönberg in World War II. In December 1944, Schönberg was the scene of bitter fighting between the troops of the German Reich and American units. After a quick counter-offensive by the Germans, 7,000 American soldiers had no alternative but to surrender. It was the largest American surrender on the European battlefield. In mid-December 1944, the soldiers of the 422nd regiment of the 106th division, all young soldiers with no front-line experience, were surrounded and taken prisoner by German troops. It is about 9000 men - the "biggest defeat that America had to accept militarily in Europe"
