In December 1944, Schönberg was the scene of fierce fighting between German Reich troops and American units. After a rapid counter-offensive by the Germans, 7,000 American soldiers had no alternative but to surrender. It was the largest American surrender on the European battlefield. More than 200 of the captured soldiers did not survive the catastrophic conditions in captivity.

On Place König-Baudouin, near the church, there is this memorial in honor of the American soldiers who died or were taken prisoner around Schönberg in World War II. In December 1944, Schönberg was the scene of bitter fighting between the troops of the German Reich and American units. After a quick counter-offensive by the Germans, 7,000 American soldiers had no alternative but to surrender. It was the largest American surrender on the European battlefield.
