For Goethe's epic »Hermann und Dorothea«, to which the poet prince was probably inspired in 1795 at the source in Bad Elster, the natural theater was created in 1911 at the same place in the forest park, the first in Saxony. In addition to the Goethe Festival, theater performances and concerts were regularly held here until 1952. Then the natural theater fell into a deep slumber.
In 2007 it was spectacularly reopened with the opera "Der Freischütz". Since then, numerous events of various genres for young and old have been taking place between May and September. In 2018, the more than 100-year-old entire facility was completely modernized, significantly expanded and a roof was installed.
