The church was built in 1650. as a branch of Alūksta parish and belonged to Calvinists. in 1713 It was reconstructed and rebuilt at the expense of Folkerzamba, the owner of the Stelmužė estate. The slightly changed building of the former church is a valuable architectural monument. The church was built by Latvian craftsmen using only axes to trim the walls, without using metal nails or saws. The interior was installed after 1713. Funded by Folkerzambs. The church of Stelmužė is the oldest surviving wooden church in the territory of Lithuania. 19th century in the middle, priest Juozapas Silvestras Dovydaitis, who established a school here and himself taught children to read and write.

In the building since 1963. there is a museum of folk sculpture, which later became a museum of ecclesiastical art. Services are held once a month (on the last Sunday).
