Meadow birds in Lower SaxonyEndangered specialists of wet open landscapesThe “meadow birds” of wet open landscapes and extensive grassland areas mainly include waders or plover-like birds. The more extensive group of “meadow and pasture birds” also includes corncrake, skylark, meadow pipit and yellow wagtail. Lower Saxony is more important for meadow waders than any other federal state in Germany. Around two thirds of all black-tailed godwits, more than half of curlews and redshanks, around 40 percent of the German lapwing population and almost one in three snipes breed here. The breeding population of the ruff, on the other hand, has almost died out. Population declines are almost everywhere at over 60 percent. The species are therefore also classified in the Red Lists of Lower Saxony and Germany.
