The most famous animal species in the national park are • The golden eagle: the king of the skies and the symbol of the national park Discovering a golden eagle in the wild requires patience and luck. But there is another way to experience the majestic bird of prey up close: directly below the Kempinski Hotel Berchtesgaden on the Obersalzberg is the eagle enclosure of falconer Wolfgang Czech, in the immediate vicinity of the departure point for the Kehlstein buses. This privately run falconry has existed since 1953; you can experience otherwise shy wild animals up close here. The birds of prey from Wolfgang Czech's eagle enclosure have already appeared in very well-known television and film productions such as "Die Geierwally". • The chamois: excellent climbers in high altitudes • The marmot: hibernating rodents that can be seen particularly in the Jenner, Gotzenalm, Wasseralm and Funtensee areas • The ibex: its impressive horns can reach a length of up to 1 meter • The red deer: the antlers of the deer were once very sought-after as a hunting trophy and made the red deer a much-hunted animal. • The capercaillie: The capercaillie and especially the capercaillie are the largest gallinaceous birds in Europe. They are very shy: the capercaillie is demanding in choosing its habitat and likes to live where it can take dust baths, where there are small water sources and where there are ants. It stays true to its place of birth and even in winter only wanders around a distance of up to 30 km in search of food. The capercaillie, which is threatened with extinction, lives in light mountain mixed forests with a high proportion of conifers. Existing clearings are used as courtship, take-off and landing sites, and for foraging. As a predominantly herbivorous animal, the capercaillie eats herbs, buds, seeds and leaves from deciduous and coniferous trees. In summer, the fruits of dwarf shrubs such as blueberries make up the majority of its diet. Young birds in particular depend on protein- and energy-rich food such as insects. Forest ants play an important role in this. The diurnal birds mostly stay on the ground, but spend the night in sleeping trees. But many other animals such as badgers, whiskers' bats, alpine salamanders and small creatures have also found a protected home in the untouched nature of the national park!
