After the region was conquered by the Romans, first a wooden and then a stone bridge was built over the Sauer, which was part of the important Roman trunk road that connected Metz and Reims with Trier. A Roman settlement arose at the bridge, which also expanded as a street settlement beyond the bridge in the direction of Trier. According to excavation finds, which were mainly made during the construction of the Trier-Luxembourg railway line in 1859/1860, it reached a greater extent than today's Wasserbilligerbrück. This settlement area was completely destroyed in the final phase of the Roman Empire.[
