A Bunte Kerke (also erroneously called Bonte Kerke; however, the word "bont" for "colorful" does not exist in the Oberbergisch language varieties) refers to a church with medieval ceiling paintings, such as those found in Germany, particularly in the Oberbergisch region of North Rhine-Westphalia. The term was originally used only for the "Bunte Kerke" in Lieberhausen, but is now also considered a collective term for all churches with similar ceiling paintings. In Lieberhausen, you can see, among other works, The Creation, The Fall of Man, St. George's Fight with the Dragon, The Last Judgment, and The Story of John the Baptist. The "Bonte Kerke" is a three-aisled Romanesque pillar basilica. Over time, it underwent several additions and renovations in the late Gothic style. The Reformation was introduced in 1586. Afterward, the paintings were supplemented with new ones, so that – unique in the Rhineland – pictures from both pre- and post-Reformation periods can be found here.
