This unassuming tree was used as a gibbet for highwaymen and smugglers who were caught in the early 19th century. Supposedly, convicts were hung and left naked at this point to deter others. A plaque marks the spot. Macabre history aside, there's lots of picturesque walking to be had in this part of the New Forest.
