The chapel stands on the southern end of the Eckbichel, a moraine hill about twenty meters high. A path with wooden steps leads up to the chapel. The chapel is registered as an architectural monument in the Bavarian monument list.

The chapel was built in 1925 to commemorate the residents of Bad Bayersoien who died in the First World War. It was modeled on a Loreto chapel near Arras in France. After the Second World War, additional plaques were added with the names of those who died in that war.

On May 8, 1985, Richard Karl Freiherr von Weizsäcker (1920 to 2015, then serving as Federal President) delivered a highly acclaimed speech at a commemorative event marking the 40th anniversary of the end of the Second World War, and his words remain relevant even 40 years later. In the final section of this speech, he addressed both a plea to young people and an appeal to politicians:
+ "The plea to young people is: Do not allow yourselves to be driven into hostility and hatred toward other people, (...). Learn to live with one another, not against one another. Let us, as democratically elected politicians, also continually heed this and set an example. LET US HONOR FREEDOM. LET US WORK FOR PEACE. Let us abide by the law. Let us serve our inner standards of justice. Let us ... as best we can, look the truth in the eye." (R. v. Weizsäcker)
