The Petrified Forest (Afrikaans Versteende Woud, English Petrified Forest) in the southwest African state of Namibia is a petrified forest, like those found in various other places on earth.
50 to 60 large fossil tree trunks, which are between 240 and 300 million years old, are scattered over an area of around 300 × 800 m. The largest trunks are around 30 m long and up to 6 m in circumference. The longest specimen still has a diameter of almost 1 m at the top, which suggests that the living tree was significantly taller.
The trunks have broken into countless smaller pieces; but even though they are millions of years old rock, the annual rings are visible. Since the trunks do not show any remains of roots, scientists assume that they were driftwood that was washed up here by a major flood - probably from Angola. (Source: Wikipedia)
