In 1593, the Niederaltaich monastery built a chapel in Weißenregen under Abbot Bernhard III Hilz, which was replaced by a larger one in 1611 by the collaborating communities of Weißenregen and Hafenberg. The current pilgrimage church was built between 1750 and 1765 after the existing chapel had become too small and dilapidated. The altars and pulpit were created by the Kötzting sculptor Johann Paulus Hager (1698-1769), only the high altar guards come from the previous altar.
