The Almodí was built on a part of the old Islamic citadel, and next to one of the Roman accesses to the city, probably in the years immediately after the reconquest, with the purpose of storing and selling wheat. It must not have been the only building intended for this function, since one is known from the Islamic period close to the mosque, in addition, it shared the function of a grain warehouse with the dockyards of the port.
